ALI 2025 – AUTHORITY LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION

25th International Group Relations Conference in Italy

25-28 SEPTEMBER 2025

Istituto Emiliani | Fognano district, Brisighella | Ravenna, Italy

SUBJECTIVITY AND ROLE-TAKING IN THE AGE OF CHAOS
Authoritarian temptations, crisis of democracies and active citizenship

The Conference is a temporary organization designed to explore and promote learning through the direct experience of conscious and unconscious processes as they emerge in the “here-and-now” of group dynamics. The intention is to generate new ways of thinking and learning and to reappraise our knowledge and values; we have the opportunity to experience ourselves in multiple and diverse roles. Assistance is provided to achieve real and sustainable change in interpreting the way we interpret the different roles in our organizations and lives, with a particular focus on roles calling for an exercise of authority and leadership.

Group relations conferences organized in Europe, North America and South America as well as Listening Posts on everyday life and conscious citizenship have long signaled the approach of an epochal systemic crisis. We are facing a phase of great turbulence – cultural, economic, political and social – that characterizes practically every aspect of the era in which we live.

In Italy, the journal Limes titles many of its recent issues alluding to this widespread perception of crisis, war and unpredictable turning points – in fact, the magazine’s latest February issue is L’ordine del Chaos. Elsewhere, scholars such as Jared Diamond, Branko Milanovic, Hartmut Rosa and many others have published important essays on these same issues entitled Upheaval. Turning Points for Nations in Crisis, Capitalism versus Capitalism, Acceleration and Alienation. For a critical theory of time in late modernity.

In the psychoanalytic field, in addition to the three large group emotional constellations described by Bion in the 1950s (fight/flight, dependence, pairing) there have long been observations on phenomena studied at the interface between individual subjects and group processes. After the detection of the manifestations of oneness (the propensity to melt in the group) so frequent in the 1970s, the social effects of neo-liberalism and turbo-capitalism led to the emergence first of phenomena of meness (the reluctance to get involved in group dynamics and the narcissist epidemic afflicting the West) and later to widespread processes of primitive group reorganization: tribal regressions, silos, fantasies of exclusion/belonging, massification and confusing aggregation.

The choice of the IL NODO group and the Directorate of ALI 2025 is to explore the paradoxical and necessary connection between the new processes of subjection and alienation on the one hand, and on the other, those that make possible re-subjectivation, the construction of one’s own authority and the assumption of social and institutional responsibilities.

ALI 2025’s proposal is to experience the Age of Chaos in a relational system specifically set up to understand what hinders – or what, on the contrary, can foster – the acquisition of awareness of one’s own role in group dynamics and the construction of a lucid and determined personal subjectivity that enhances the will for social initiative.

The method employed for action-research on these issues is that of the systemic-psychodynamic tradition of group relations conferences – a working perspective that after almost seventy years (the first Leicester conference was in 1957) has not ceased to be effective.

Opened by the general plenaries and concluded by the review and application groups, ALI 2025 will be structured as a succession of small and large group sessions, social dreaming processes, intergroup dynamics and a long and challenging organizational event.

The dates are as specified under the title (25-28 September 2025) and the host institution is located in the village of Brisighella, in the province of Ravenna.

We cordially invite you to come and work with us.
Director Giovanni Foresti
Vicedirector Francesco Noseda

Clear
THE PRIMARY TASK

To learn from the experience of the conference about the conscious and unconscious aspects of authority and leadership, enabling participants to explore and understand the process that moves from the recognition of subjugation to the possibility of becoming a subject – actively engaging with personal choices and collective decision- making.

WHO IS THIS CONFERENCE FOR?

Participation in the Conference is valuable for those working in business contexts and services, whether public or private, who are interested in understanding, managing, and improving organizational and group dynamics while enhancing their effectiveness in
addressing them.

METHODOLOGY STRUCTURE

The approach adopted for the action research on these themes is rooted in the systemic – psychodynamic tradition of group relations conferences – a methodology that, after nearly seventy years (dating back to the first Leicester conference in 1957), remains highly effective. The design of the Conference and the activities offered to participants facilitate experiential learning. This refers to an educational process based on the direct experience of group and organizational dynamics, fostering self-reflective capacities and encouraging a spirit of inquiry. Participants, together with the staff, will critically explore various experiences and behaviors, as well as their own approaches to assuming and interpreting leadership and followership roles. Commencing with general plenary sessions and concluding with review and application groups, ALI 2025 will feature a progression of small and large group sessions, social dreaming processes, inter-group dynamics, and an extended, intensive organizational event. This form of learning is not intended to be therapeutic and may, at times, prove stressful. Therefore, individuals currently facing significant personal challenges are advised to consider postponing their participation to a future edition.

SCHEDULE

The Conference will begin at 11:00 a.m. on 25 September 2025 and conclude at 5:30 p.m. on 28 September. Reception and registration of participants will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. on 25 September. Participants are expected to attend the entire Conference program, which is residential, as living together is an integral part of the learning experience.
